VACAYA Is Skipping Its Winter 2028 Caribbean Cruise. Here’s Why.
If you were waiting for VACAYA’s winter 2028 Caribbean cruise, you’ll need a different plan. VACAYA says it will sit out that seasonal big-ship sailing as Tryst prepares to enter the full-ship gay cruise market. Tryst has since announced two charters, giving you a clearer picture of the competition VACAYA was anticipating.

Why VACAYA is sitting this one out
In VACAYA’s full statement, the company says its big-ship cruises need to come close to selling out to avoid a loss. It expects Tryst and Atlantis to compete for many of the same guests and says it can't afford sustained losses while they do. That's VACAYA's assessment of its own position, rather than a forecast of either rival's results.
“We simply don’t have the financial cushion to absorb sustained losses while waiting to see who ultimately claims the crown.”
The company frames the pause as a way to protect its future and keep independent gay travel businesses in the mix. It also asks guests what they value in a Caribbean cruise through a survey linked in the statement. Your feedback matters.
Who is VACAYA?
VACAYA launched in 2018, announcing a first season in 2019 that included Celebrity Summit, a resort takeover at UNICO in Mexico and a European river cruise. Its business reaches beyond winter Caribbean sailings, spanning big ships, smaller vessels, resorts and tours.
The company welcomes the broader LGBT+ community and allies. Its team page lists Randle Roper as chief experience officer and Patrick Gunn as chief marketing officer. If you're comparing the kind of vacation each organizer offers, start with our Atlantis, VACAYA, Brand g and Big Gay Cruise comparison. The organizer matters.
Who is behind Tryst Cruises?
Tryst Hospitality was founded by Tristan Schukraft, whose businesses include Tryst Hotels and gay nightlife venues you may already know. Its company profile names The Abbey in West Hollywood, Circo in San Juan, DS Tequila in Chicago, and Fire Island Pines venues including The Blue Whale, The Pavilion and The Canteen. Schukraft is also behind the telehealth business MISTR.
The cruise launch draws explicitly on that network. In its October 26 announcement, Tryst describes bringing events inspired by its land venues to sea, including an Abbey takeover, Blue Whale Low Tea and its drag brunch. Schukraft says: “I’m bringing together the best of our destinations at sea.” Think familiar venues, new setting.
That gives Tryst a recognizable identity before embarkation. Whether its shipboard service, event production and guest experience match that promise will be for its first passengers to judge.
Before the ships, there are the hotels
If you're wondering what a Tryst cruise might feel like, its hotels offer a few clues. As of November 3, 2026, Tryst Hotels’ website lists Puerto Vallarta as open, with San Juan, Fire Island, Provincetown, Rio, Chicago and Wilton Manors marked “coming soon.” Several destinations remain in development.
Some Puerto Vallarta guests have been enthusiastic. In a December 2025 Reddit account of a recent stay, u/Tjcnkc praised the rooms, staff and drag shows:
“The staff is very friendly and the hotel is gay owned and caters almost exclusively to lgbt customers.”
In a September 2026 reply, after reporting further stays, the same commenter described “a pretty diverse crowd both older and younger.” If you're wondering whether the hotel feels welcoming across ages, that's one repeat guest's experience. Read the original stay report and the follow-up about the crowd.
Another repeat guest, u/Adventurous_Ant93, wrote in December 2025:
“It’s a nice hotel, great rooftop (which can get busy now depending on events since it is open to the public) and a new 2nd floor pool just for guests.”
They also recommended the hotel and liked its location near gay nightlife. Their account captures a practical trade-off: the lively rooftop can draw more than hotel guests. Read the comment.
Other visitors had a more mixed experience. u/Rachel21321, describing a drag-brunch visit and a separate evening at the upper bar in September 2025, said the rooftop pool area became crowded and reported that the upper bar closed at 9 p.m. Their assessment:
“Service was very friendly but it wasn’t quite what I expected.”
Read the visitor’s comment. These are individual accounts, and the rooftop visits described here took place in 2025. Use them to understand expectations about the hotel, rather than as reviews of cruises that haven't sailed.
The two Tryst cruises announced so far
Tryst's published schedule names two adults-only, full-ship charters. Here's the announced plan.
| Ship | Dates and length | Departure | Announced ports |
|---|---|---|---|
| Celebrity Beyond | October 31–November 6, 2027; six nights | Fort Lauderdale, round trip | Puerto Plata, Samaná and Nassau |
| Wonder of the Seas | February 4–11, 2028; seven nights | Miami, round trip | Samaná, San Juan and Philipsburg |
The launch announcement targets about 3,200 guests on the first voyage and 5,800 on the second. Tryst promotes the latter as the largest gay cruise ever. That's a claim about a future event; the sailing and attendance haven't happened yet. Its maiden-voyage promotion also promises a private Bahamas beach-club finale with an unnamed celebrity performer.
As checked November 3, the FAQ says bookings are expected in late November, with category details and prices to follow. The second charter is separately labeled on sale in 2027. Confirm the opening date for your chosen voyage. Solo guests may be able to use its proposed Sailor Match cabin-sharing program; details remain pending. For the format itself, our full-ship charter versus hosted group guide explains what changes when an organizer takes over the whole vessel.
What gay cruisers are saying
The public discussions we read included excitement about another choice, affection for VACAYA and caution about a new cruise operator. Opinions varied. These comments illustrate individual views, not a poll of gay cruisers.
In a public KGAY Travel Trips Facebook thread, Gino D'Agostino wrote on October 27: Can’t wait to book!
Read the comment.
In that same thread, John Ramsey questioned the pace of the hotel rollout and wrote: I'm a little surprised they are jumping into the cruise market so aggressively.
That's his concern about the expansion, rather than evidence that a cruise will be delayed. Read the comment. The thread began with a sales post from travel agent Steven Krumholz, so it also has a commercial context.
A separate public Atlantis Facebook group discussion of VACAYA's statement brought out different priorities. Shane Norris wrote on October 12: Honestly Atlantis could use some healthy competition.
Read the comment.
Matt Berg replied on October 13: I LOVE VACAYA and their big ship cruises.
He also discussed the difficulty of fitting smaller trips into his budget. That's a useful reminder if you're mourning the missing winter sailing: a different destination or smaller ship doesn't automatically replace the trip you wanted at a price you can manage. Read the comment.
Elsewhere in that discussion, Scott Rappoport expressed caution about booking an unfamiliar brand and questioned VACAYA's decision to give it attention. Todd Hellman welcomed competition and said route and timing could persuade him to try Tryst. You can read Scott’s comment and Todd’s comment in context. Facebook may ask you to sign in.
What comes next for VACAYA?
In VACAYA’s full statement, VACAYA says it's developing a summer 2028 big-ship option and working on French Polynesia, Japan, the Canary Islands, Western Africa, a South Africa safari and an all-inclusive resort. Those are plans in development, with details to come. It also says it has secured a Singapore-to-Bali cruise for 2029 and is working toward a Caribbean return.
Keep the dates separate. The winter 2028 decision concerns one familiar seasonal trip. It doesn't describe the company's entire future calendar, and an option in development isn't a booking-ready replacement.
If you want to stay with the company, check our VACAYA operator page and the operator's own trip announcements. Confirm the ship, dates, fare and cancellation terms for the specific vacation you choose.
What this means for your next gay cruise
If winter 2028 in the Caribbean is your priority, compare the actual sailings as they go on sale. Wait for the full fare, payment schedule, cancellation policy and inclusions before comparing value. A launch announcement can tell you the ambition; your booking terms tell you what you're buying.
Choose your priorities first. If you loved VACAYA for its hosts, atmosphere or the friends you made, talk to those friends before scattering across different ships. If you're curious about Tryst, look for the detailed program, accessible cabin arrangements and any dietary or solo-travel requirements that matter to you.
Start with our guide to gay cruise prices and gay cruise calendar, then confirm details directly with the organizer. Pick the vacation you want to wake up on, with people you're looking forward to seeing.
