How gay-friendly is Istanbul?
Galataport places cruise passengers beside Karaköy, below Galata and across the water from the historic peninsula. Trams make Sultanahmet straightforward; steep streets make Beyoğlu a little more honest. Mosques, palaces, markets, ferries, and food can fill several days, so a port call needs priorities instead of a heritage buffet.
Istanbul retains discreet gay cafés, clubs, and gay-popular hamams around Taksim, but the scene is volatile and legal or political pressure can close venues quickly. Icon Cafe Pub is the current successor to Café Mor Kedi after the same team moved and rebranded in June 2026. Long-running Tek Yön was shut that month, so it is deliberately not recommended. Firuzağa Hamam remains a current lead, though it is gay-popular rather than exclusively gay. No dedicated gay beach was verified. Check same-day status, carry ID, avoid public affection, and do not photograph patrons.
